Mary is featured on a donkey while Joseph is guiding them along toward the inn-keeper in Bethlehem. Signage in the central foreground reads, "Joseph and Mary wen to the city of David, called Bethlehem, to be taxed according to law. And as there was no room for them in the inn they sought shelter in the stables." The date, photographic sequence number and photographer's name are printed on the bottom of the recto, "12-18-46; 22709-4x; Davis B. Hillmer."
