Photograph. Black and white aerial photo of the Detroit Edison River Rouge Power Plant coal conveyor system. Railroad hopper cars used for carrying coal can be seen in the foreground with elevated conveyor lines visible in the center. Coal piles can be seen in the left center area of the photo. Various industrial factory buildings, storage tanks, and aerial power lines can be seen in the background. The I-75 bridge over the Rouge River is faintly visible in the distant background near the top of the photo. An accompanying typewritten note shows "DE Photo 515-3105. Unit Train to Steam Boiler conveyor system at the River Rouge Power Plant ranks among the most modern, economic, and efficient coal handling processes in the nation. The system moves 2,500 tons of coal per hour and, in the event this is more than is required in the plant at the time, the system conveys the coal to storage yards. From the yards, coal is just as accessible to the system as directly from unit trains. In the foreground are coal cars of one of the unit trains, already empty, and moving along at one car per minute until the rest of the 86 cars have been dumped."
