Our oral history projects allow Detroiters to share their stories in their own words, with their own voices, and through their own understanding of what has happened in the community, and why. Nearly 1,000 oral histories have been collected for our continuing projects, transcribed, and housed in this online archive, which is free and open to all. This valuable collection of firsthand experiences and recollections of events forms the basis for new Detroit Historical Society exhibitions and programming and is also used by educators, scholars, and artists around the world. Browse and be inspired by new perspectives!
The oral history team is currently collecting oral and written histories about Detroit's neighborhoods and the Covid-19 pandemic. If you have a story you would like to share, we would be happy to hear it! You can share your story by reaching out to the Oral History team at 313-833-7912 or clicking below.
