Lets Get It On
Marvin Gaye LP, "Let's Get It On," released by Motown Records in 1973, and features the title track, "Let's Get It On," as well as "Come Get To This," and "Just To Keep You Satisfied." A blurred image of Marvin Gaye wearing a red skull cap, jean jacket, and yellow T-shirt, is featured on the cover. The gate fold album includes images of Gaye relaxing, smoking a cigarette, and playing an air guitar. Stated on the inside of the album, I can't see anything wrong with sex between consenting anybodies. I think we make far too much of it. After all one's genitals are just one important part of the magnificent human body, I have no argument with the essential part they play in the reproduction of the species; however, the reproductive process has been assured by the pleasure both parties receive when they engage in it. I contend that SEX IS SEX and LOVE IS LOVE. When combined, they work well together, if two people are of about the same mind. But, they are really two discrete needs and should be treated as such. Time and space will not permit me to expound further, especially in the area of the psyche. I don't believe in overly moralistic philosophies. Have your sex, it can be very exciting, if you're lucky. I hope the music I present here makes you lucky. 'Birth and copulation and death, that's all the facts when you get to brass tacks,' T.S. Eliot. And now I'd like to give my sincere thanks and appreciation to all the musicians who labored on this album in love and purpose and did not treat the musical compositions on this album with the attitude of this being just another gig. Thank you Plas, thank you C.P., thank you Bobbye, thank you Ernie, thank you Wah-Wah, thank you Gene Page, thank you David VanDePitte, and thank you Cal Harris, who practically produced this thing and didn't ask for anything. Great! And thanks to all you women for sweet inspiration. MARVIN GAYE. P.S. Those sex voices on intro of 'You Sure Love to Ball,' are Madeline and Fred Ross. P.P.S. Thank you Ed Townsend." The verso of the LP features the complete track listing, and echoes the image on the cover.
