United States Coast Guard Continuous Discharge Book No. 315486
One United States Coast Guard [USGS] Continuous Discharge Book No. 315486 issued to Julia Johanna Blake. The tri-fold book has a military green, cloth hardcover and is printed on the front in black text: "315486, U. S. Coast Guard, Continuous Discharge Book." A clear plastic window on the front cover allows the owner's last name, "Blake," to be seen. The inside front pages show printed text on slightly yellowed paper including a "Notice to Seaman" and the "Law Pertaining to Continuous Discharge Books." The second and third pages show personal data, photo, date of issuance, and a thumbprint. The remaining pages include blank lines that were to be filled in by ship masters to indicate the name of the vessel on which the seaman had served, dates of service, rating, and voyage description. (Three lines are filled in which indicate that Julia Blake served on three Great Lakes steamships between May and September, 1945.) The inside back cover of the book has a canvas strip which was used to hold the U. S. Coast Guard certificate in place.
