One United States Department of Commerce Continuous Discharge Book No. 182165 issued to Arthur Leisk Stubbs. The book and cover flap have a military green, cloth hardcover. A clear plastic window on the front cover allows the owner's last name, "Stubbs" to be seen. The inside front pages show printed text on slightly yellowed paper including a "Notice to Seamen" and the "Law Regulating Discharge of Seamen." The second and third pages show personal data, a photo, date of issuance, and a thumbprint. The remaining pages include blank lines that were to be filled in by ship masters to indicate the name of the vessel on which the seaman had served, dates of service, rating, and voyage description. (Lines 1 through 16 of the book are filled in with Great Lakes ship service details from September, 1937, to December, 1946.) The inside back cover of the book has a canvas strip which was used to hold seaman's certificates in place.
