Booklet

The Riot
A Presentation of Grade School Children's
Thoughts About the Detroit Riot - Summer 1967

One softcover booklet entitled, "The Riot." The booklet has a thin, black cardboard cover with a white adhesive label on the front and handwritten pen text for the title. A chrome-plated steel, compression-type binding is located on the interior center spine and it holds 22 pages of typewritten text with photographs.
The first interior page shows the booklet title, "The Riot," along with a sketch of people who are firing guns from the ground and from rooftops. The second interior page shows a subtitle, "A Presentation of Grade School Children's Thoughts About the Detroit Riot - Summer 1967" as compiled by Steven Balkin. (He was a substitute teacher in the Detroit Public Schools in the Fall of 1967 and he asked his 5th and 6th grade students to write papers about the recent riot in the city.) The remaining 20 pages contain typewritten text and photographs. Some background information is given in the first three pages, but most of the text includes transcriptions and excerpts of the students' papers. Photographs are credited to Robert Burch and Bernard Codotte.
