Brevet Major General Alpheus S. Williams
1 - Certificate detailing Brevet Major General Alpheus S. Williams' military service in the Civil War. The certificate is signed by Adjutant General Edward Davis Townsend on the bottom left and General William Tecumseh Sherman on the bottom right. The text of the certificate is as follows:
"Brevet Major General Alpheus S. Williams.
U.S. Volunteers.
War enrolled October 18th 1847, and mustered into service December 8th 1847, as Lieutenant Colonel 1st Michigan Volunteers. Left Detroit Michigan January 1848 with the Second Battalion of his Regiment for Mexico; served with regiment in Mexico to June 1848 and was honorably mustered out therewith at Detroit Michigan July 29th 1848.
He was appetency by the Governor of Michigan in April 1861 Brigadier General of the troops of that state then enlisting for the war; and commanded the Camp of Instruction at Fort Wayne Michigan to September 1861. Commissioned Brigadier General of Volunteers, August 7th to rank from May 17th 1861, which he accepted August 26th 1861.

Commanding 3Rd Brigade, Bank's Division, Army of the Potomac from October 8th 1861, to March 20th 1862: 1st Division 5th Corps to April 12th 1862: 1st Division Department of the Shenandoah to June 1862: 2nd Corps, Army of Va. to September 15th 1862: 1st Division 12th Corps to September 17th 1862: 12th Corps to October 20th 1862: 1st Division 12th Corps to July 1st 1863: 12th Corps to July 4th 1863: 1st Division 12th Corps to April 5th 1864: 1st Division 20th Corps to July 28th 1864: 20th Corps to August 28th 1864: 1st Division 20th Corps to November 11th 1864: 20th Corps to April 4th 1865.
Commanding with the rank of Brevet Major General.
Brevetted Major General, January 19th 1865.
For marked ability and energy &c.
From January 12th 1865, 1st Division 20th Corps to June 6th 1865; and Provisional Division to July 27th 1865, when he proceeded to his home - Detroit Michigan to await further orders.
From September 5th to November 26th 1865, he commanded the Ouchita District Department of Arkansas. Honorably mustered out of service January 15th 1866.
