Keweenaw Waterway, Michigan,
Including Torch Lake

One navigational chart entitled, "Keweenaw Waterway, Michigan, Including Torch Lake," that was compiled and published by the Army Corps of Engineers, U. S. Lake Survey. The chart (No. 944) is a polyconic projection and is drawn at a scale of 1:30,000. It shows the Keweenaw Waterway (Portage Lake and Lake Superior Ship Canal) from the west side of the Keweenaw Peninsula to Keweenaw Bay on the east. The chart also shows the Cities of Hancock and Houghton as well as Portage Lake, Torch Bay, and Torch Lake. An inset chart is shown at the top of the sheet for the Cities of Hancock and Houghton. Land areas are shaded in pale yellow. Lake areas are shown in white and light blue depending upon water depths which are shown in feet. Distances are given in statute miles. Lines of latitude and longitude are shown in black. Course bearings are shown along with navigational range markers. Lighthouses and buoys are shown in red. Printed text in the lower left corner shows "Edition of August, 1940."
