Diploma

George W. Stark's honorary Doctor of Letters diploma from Wayne University, conferred June 1946. The diploma is housed within a green leather folder. The message inside reads:

George Washington Stark, a native of Detroit; educated in Detroit public schools and at the University of Michigan; member of the Detroit Historical Commission and Official Historiographer for the City of Detroit; past President of the Detroit Historical Society; now a member of the Editorial Staff and Conductor of the Town Talk column of "The Detroit News"--
In a distinguished career of forty years as reporter, dramatic critic, city editor, special feature writer and columnist, he has won recognition for his rare journalistic talent and has uniquely applied that talent as chronicler and local historian. he is the author of two notable books on the history of Detroit, and has been the moving spirit in the work of the Detroit Historical Society which last year raised the funds for the building of an Historical Museum on the Wayne University Campus.
In his writing, the passing scene and the transient activity of our daily living in this dynamic city are set against their historic background. The people, little and big, who together have built this city take their rightful places in the developing traditions. As the official recorder of our local history, as one who has helped to make the community aware of its own rich heritage, he has become a kind of civic conscience challenging us to build on those wonderful foundations a city of the future worthy of its past.
