On July 23, 1967 I remember feeling an eerie quiteness around the neighborhood where I lived in East Detroit (since renamed Eastpointe). On July 24th I had to start working at my new job as a Medical Technologist at Detroit General Hospital. Since there was no bus transportation and I had no car the city ambulance picked me up at home. We then drove into the the city to pick up other employees.
Most of the time I kept my head down for fear of getting shot.
As we drove around the city I remember seeing the National Guard with their rifles drawn and thought this was the most frightening experience that I will always remember.
I was an employee for the city of Detroit until 1980 and have many fond memories of working there.
