Muriel Smith

Muriel Smith describes her mother's experiences as a nurse in July, 1967.

Text
I am speaking for my deceased mother (May, 2013). My mother, Mrs. Senora D. Smith, was an operating room nurse at Receiving Hospital/Detroit General Hospital when the hospital was in downtown Detroit across from the former police headquarters. She was needed to work afternoons during that period, but because she did not drive, it meant that either Daddy or I would have to drive at night through dangerous areas, to bring her home. She and other nurses refused to come to work, so the hospital picked her and other nurses up in ambulances, and brought them back home in ambulances. The nurses worked extra hours, but they felt safe and protected in the ambulances. Mom died at age 98 in 2013, but still remembered that time.
