I have a Commendation Certificate on my wall, signed by John F. Nichols, Police Dept. Superintendent, for service during the 1967 civil disturbance in the city. I was a reserve policeman called to active duty. I worked out of the 10th Precinct at Livernois and Elmhurst. As a recently discharged U.S. Army veteran (1962), I was the only individual in the precinct who had been trained by the Army on its then relatively new M-14 Rifle. A confiscated one was in the precinct armory, so it was assigned to me. I also carried my S&W .38 cal sidearm. The M-14 remained in my car for the entire period, as I thought it was overkill.
