Sheryl Davies

Sheryl Davies recalls her experience of hiring a private plane when the international border crossing was closed off in July 1967, denying her access to Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

I was booked to fly to Las Vegas to visit a Windsor friend who was a summer camp counselor, living that summer with her relatives. The day they closed the U.S./Canadian border, was the day I was flying out. As a 16 year old Canadian teenager, I had no cancellation insurance, so we hired a four-seat airplane at the Windsor Airport that flew over Detroit as it burned. I had a first-hand aerial view at 10,000 feet high as we flew to Detroit Metro. It was an experience to remember.
