Digital video taken from a MiniDV tape containing edited footage of Pearl Cleage's presentation for the 16th Annual Bauder Contemporary American Authors Lecture, and the proceeding reception and awards ceremony, held at Marygrove College on April 16, 2004.
This version includes opening title cards, end credits, and on-screen titles identifying speakers.
The reception is hosted by Marygove's president, Dr. Glenda Price, and begins with remarks by Nettie H. Seabrooks of the Detroit Institute of Arts, S. Martin Taylor of DTE Energy, and Donald and Lillian Bauder. Dr. Frank Rashid, the Chair of English and Modern Languages, then presents awards to the winners of the McCombs-Currier Writing Awards. The program ends with some brief words from Pearl Cleage.
The main lecture program is hosted by Dr. Frank Rashid, the Chair of English and Modern Languages. Following a performance by the jazz trio, Teddy Harris Jr. and New Breed Be Bop Society, Dr. Glenda Price then provides some introductory remarks about the program, and Rashid introduces Cleage.
In her presentation, Cleage reads an essay that addresses her childhood, being a writer, 9-11, war, patriarchy, and caring for children.
Rashid then returns to the podium for closing remarks as the recording fades out.
