Digital video captured from a Video8 tape containing raw footage of the Dinner and Writing Awards program held in conjunction with Ernest J. Gaines' appearance at Marygrove College as part of their Contemporary American Authors Lecture series. This event occurred on Friday, April 24, 1998 at the college's Madame Cadillac Building.

The recording begins with a series of shots of pinned up printouts serving as opening title cards. The footage from the actual event begins with Marygrove's Interim President, Dr. Andrea Lee, IHM at the podium speaking as the event's host, albeit without audio initially. The audio recording begins as she recognizes several members of the audience, and calls Deputy Mayor Nettie H. Seabrooks to speak. Dr. Lee then calls the event's co-chair, S. Martin Taylor of DTE to speak next. Dr. Lee then recognizes two more people in the audience, before introducing Dr. Barbara Johns, IHM to announce the winners of the McCombs-Currier Writing Awards. After the students are presented their awards, Ernest J. Gaines briefly addresses the audience. Dr. Lee then thanks the English Department and provides some closing announcements about the following reading program, before the recording fades out.
