Digital video captured from a Video8 tape containing edited footage of the dinner event and award ceremony held on April 23, 1994, following the 6th annual Marygrove College Contemporary American Authors Lecture Series featuring Octavia E. Butler.

The event is hosted by Marygrove's President John Shay. Other speakers include Vice President Sister Carol A. Quigley, IHM, who reads one of the poems from Butler's "Parable of the Sower," and provides a prayer; Student Nicole Hart[?], who sings a trio of Spanish songs; Lecture alum Mary Helen Washington; Deputy Mayor Nettie H. Seabrooks; Professor Lynn Schaffer, who announces the winners of the Amy S. McCombs-Frederick P. Currier Writing Awards; State Senator Jackie Vaughn, who presents an official proclamation to Butler; City Council member Alberta Tinsley-Talabi, who also presents an official proclamation; student Glen Holcomb who sings three pieces; student and McCombs-Currier award winner Kimberly Figgs, who leads a "tentacle" salute; and finally Octavia Butler, who expresses thanks.
