Digital video captured from a MiniDV tape containing raw footage of the Edward P. Jones' reading followed by a question and answer session at Marygrove College as part of the Contemporary American Authors Lecture series. This event occurred on April 8, 2005.
The recording begins with Dr. Frank Rashid of the Marygrove College English Department at the podium making introductory remarks. Next, Marygrove's president, Dr. Glenda P. Rice, addresses the crowd. Dr. Rashid then provides an introduction for Edward P. Jones.
Edward P. Jones then reads a portion of the short story "The Devil Swims across the Anacostia River," followed by an excerpt from his novel "The Known World." After the readings, he responds to questions from the audience. In these responses he talks about the character of Counsel Skiffington from "The Known World," differences between printings of "The Known World," and the verisimilitude of the setting in his novel. Afterward, the recording fades as Dr. Rashid return to the podium to make some closing announcements.
