Silent color 16mm film containing footage presumably shot for "Detroit Means Business," of a kite flying event on the riverfront west of downtown, followed by a cycling event along Woodbridge Street, east of the Renaissance Center.
The film opens with a series of shot of people flying kites over the green space along the riverfront to the west of Joe Louis Arena, presumably as part of the Stroh's-Free Press Kite Flying Contest on September 10, 1981. Pennants are strung across the park, and Joe Louis, the Detroit Free Press printing plant, and the ventilation tower for the Michigan Central Railway Tunnel are all in view as the camera moves around.
The camera then moves to the foot of St. Antoine Street, near the Renaissance Center where a group of cyclists are gathered for an event. The camera gets a brief shot of a route map held by one participant, labeled "East Riverfront Bicycle Route Dedication Activities, September 19, 1981." A woman can also be seen holding an "East Riverfront" brochure. The cyclists are then filmed as they take off from St. Antoine and Renaissance Drive, northeast along Woodbridge Street. The reel ends with the camera person standing in front of the Detroit Racquet Club, filming the pack of cyclists as the pedal off in the distance to the northeast.
The reel is core housed in a 35mm tin with 2015.007.074. An Allied Film Labs label on the tin is made out to R. Salt, and dated August 1981.
