Why You Should Vote for Philbrook for Mayor

Flyer. Political flyer advocating the election of Ralph Alger Philbrook as mayor of Detroit. The recto contains a passage, written by Philbrook detailing five reasons to vote for him. The first two are brief--support for a local option in regard to Prohibition, and a universal transfer system for buses and streetcars. The last three point compose a lengthy diatribe against the Congress of Industrial Organizations and John L. Lewis, in which the CIO are referred to as "pirates," and John L. Lewis is compared to a dictator. He closes with a post script concerning his opponent John W. Smith criticizing his natural gas deal with the gas company. The verso contains a political cartoon depicting a woman informing a CIO representative that he husband has left the union, and the dues money has been spent on milk. The second panel depicts Lewis and UAW president Richard Frankensteen and vice president Homer Martin collecting bags and armfuls of money from Chrysler, and General Motors, while exclaiming that they make more money than Standard Oil and the Pennsylvania Railroad combined. A barrel of money with "For Roosevelt" is next to them. "Workingmen - Wake Up! - - Why Be Suckers?" is printed above, and "Philbrook will stop this racket if elected mayor," is below.
