It is with no common pride and gratification that we acknowledge the reception for the Archives of our Society-the "Battered Standard" of your noble Regiment. Its shall be preserved among the most sacred relics which we have in charge and I will ever call to mind the glorious history of the Regiment itself. The dying words of the noble Brodhead inscribed upon its folds are suggestive of the tenderest recollections of the brave and noble men who have belonged to you Regiment who have freely and noble given their lives for their country.
The Michigan Cavalry have gallantry won glorious distinction where ever they have been called into action throughout the war. And among the Michigan Regiments no one has a prouder history than then First Michigan Cavalry, and the annals of our State will be illuminated by the record of their noble deeds.
There is no fear but that in the future they will maintain the glorious name in history they have won in the past.
Very respectfully your obt. servant
C.I. Walker
