Lithograph

Detroit 1852

Lithograph, titled "Detroit 1852" by Robert Bürger, featuring 21 scenes of the city. The central image, captioned "View of Detroit from M.C.R.R. Wheat Depot," depicts a group of people on the observation platform atop the Michigan Central Railroad's wheat depot. The rail yard, including the domed Michigan Central Railroad roundhouse, is visible in the immediate background, as is traffic on the river on the right. The central image is bordered by 20 smaller scenes, including a large panoramic one along the top border captioned, "View of Detroit, from the Canada Shore near Sandwich." Here sail and steam vessels dot the river, and Detroit's riverfront is visible in the background, including both the wheat depot and roundhouse near the left. From the top right clockwise, the other scenes are titled, "Hydraulic Works" (the reservoir building on Orleans Street), "First Presbyterian Church," "St. Pauls Church," "Jefferson Avenue," "St. Johns Church [German]," "City Hall and National Hotel" (adjacent to Campus Martius), "Michigan Exchange" (on Jefferson Avenue), "Brush Place," "Residence of Gen. Lewis Cass," "U.S. Court House," "Fort Wayne," "Elmwood Cemetery, Mariners Church and Post Office," "Biddle House and Firemens Hall," "Johnsons Hotel and M.C.R.R. Office," "Market" (Central Market), "Old State Capitol," "French Catholic Church" (St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church), and "Gas Buildings" (presumably the Detroit Gas Light Company's buildings on Woodbridge Street between Fifth and Sixth Streets). Text along the bottom of the composition reads, "Drawn and Lith. by R. Bürger," "Entered according to the act of Congress in the Clerks office of the District of Michigan in the year 1853, by Robert Bürger & Cuno Dix," and "Printed and Published by R. Bürger & C. Dix, Beaubien Str. betw. Jeff. Ave. & Woodbr. Str. Detroit." The print is mounted on linen.
