Engineer's Log
Steamer, Eastern States
One "Engineers Log" for the passenger steamer EASTERN STATES of the Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Company. The log book has a dark green cloth hardcover and contains approximately 200 sheets of paper (un-numbered) that have printed and handwritten text on both sides. Gold-colored lettering on the spine reads "Engineer's Log, Eastern States, D.&C. N. Co., Cleveland Division." Interior pages have blank lines at the top for the steamer name, trip number, and date. Beneath this are column headings for "Day of Month, Ports and Lights, Miles, Time, Revolutions, Steam." The last column is reserved for details on tons of freight, number of passengers, number of autos, date of steering gear inspection, water supply condition and filling, date of filter cleaning, and condition of water sterilizer. The bottom of the page has blank lines for additional notes. Handwritten entries are shown in black ink or pencil throughout the log book and include the following range of vessel trips: Trip 53, October 12, 1936, through Trip 71, September 15, 1946.
A special entry was recorded for Trip 17, June 5, 1939, which noted "King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited Windsor [Ontario] June 6th 1939 about 8:15 P.M. Made trip and anchored close to Windsor for spectators to see them."
