Nahant Log Book
One ship's log book. The log book has a cardboard cover with a marbled paper finish and contains 128 pages that are printed with light blue lines on white paper. The front endpaper has a handwritten note that shows "Came out New; Prop. Nahants Log Book for 1873; R. H. White, Master." The following pages are filled with short daily entries that have been handwritten in ink concerning the ship's position, weather conditions, cargo loading/unloading, and other details.
Handwritten log entries are dated as follows:
Pages 1-25; June 9 to November 20, 1873.
Pages 26-70; March 3 to November 7, 1874.
Pages 72-110; May 14 to November 2, 1875.
Pages 111- 112; April 3 to May 8, 1876.
Pages 113-114 are blank.
A loose paper on the inside front cover and pages 115-128 contain handwritten general notes about typical wind directions for upbound and downbound travel on Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie as well as the Sue (St. Mary's?) River. The back endpaper has several additional handwritten notes with a date of 1882. The inside back cover has a foldout table entitled "Table of Wages, From 1 to 30 Days, at From 8 to 40 Dollars Per Month."
