Michigan Essay:
or the Impartial Observer

One reproduction copy of the newspaper, "Michigan Essay: or the Impartial Observer." The 4-page newspaper, dated August 31, 1809, Vol. 1, No. 1, is printed in black text on both sides of a bi-fold sheet of newsprint style paper. It was to "be published every Thursday" in "Detroit, Territory of Michigan," by James M. Miller. The first two pages carry mostly foreign news articles which appear to be reprints/extracts of articles that had appeared in other newspapers within the previous 1 to 3 months. Also included are several advertisements, poems, humorous anecdotes, and miscellaneous comments. Most of the text is in English, but several articles are in French.
