Detroit Civic Center, Proposal of Riverfront Club Affiliated
Postcard bearing a color illustration of a proposed redesign of Detroit's riverfront, the "New Gateway of Detroit," consisting of a convention hall, industrial and labor exposition hall, state administration building, city county building, and an underground garage. Pictured in the illustration is roadway along the riverfront backed by a long building to the south of Jefferson Avenue. On the northeast and northwest corners of Woodward Avenue and Jefferson are twin buildings consisting of a tower atop a broad base. The illustration is credited to the Menzinger Foundation Art School. Lynford W. Smith is credited as the plan's sponsor and Arthur L. Wilson as its architect. A list of the members of the Sponsoring and Endorsing Committee of Riverfront Clubs Affiliated is printed on the verso, along with a stamp for democratic delegate James P. Keenan and a typewritten message from Keenan endorsing the elections of George D. O'Brien to Congress, Royal D. Rood for state senate, and Henry S. Wich for state representative. Both Keenan and Rood are listed among the members of the Riverfront Clubs Affiliated Sponsoring and Endorsing Committee.
