Diaspora: A Celebration
Poster, "Diaspora: A Celebration," printed in black on white backing. A drawing of a young boy, possibly on horseback, is on the left side of the poster. The drawing is signed "OWENS" at center left. The title, "Diaspora: A Celebration," is at the top right of the poster, with text underneath reading "Relinking the African World / Community Rejuindre La Communite Du Monde Africain Encadenar La / Communidad De Munda Africano Umoja." A poem, written by Sarah Carolyn Reese in March 1980, occupies the right side of the poster. The text of the poem is as follows:
"Heart-throbbing
Spirits-talking-Drums
Resound through the Diaspora
In ancient Afrikan rhythms
They call inheritors of the Culture
to the Celebration
In honor of our Trinity
Our Predecessors
Ourselves
Our-To-Be-Born
Young horsemen ride with pride
On remnants of brilliant yesterdays
When Kings on frisky, gloriously
Decorated steeds led Hosts
In stately grandeur
Across the sands savannahs forests
Of Ancient Kingdoms
Ghana
Mali
Songhay
Today we celebrate
An oldnew Trinity
Rising phoenix-like from Colonial ashes
Clarifying our One culture
Pilgrims artisans griots dancers
Traverse the World-ways
Recalling Old Traditions
Relinking culturally in the New Worlds
Swearing UMOJA for the future
Afrika anew
Cause celebre
Our Trinity of Trinities"
Text at the bottom of the poster reads "Detroit May 22 through May 26, 1980 / Diaspora Planning Committee Room 842, 5057 Woodward Detroit, Michigan 48202."
