Leave No Tree in France Standing!
World War I poster with the message: "Leave No Tree in France Standing! (German Official Edict)" The poster shows a sketch of German soldiers cutting down trees. Accompanying text notes, "Wherever the Hun has gone, there he has left wanton, needless desolation. Towns and villages have been sacked and burned, cathedrals destroyed, even the unoffending trees felled to earth in his diabolic purpose to create a desert where the labor of centuries had made the land to smile. This is not war, but the hellish instinct of barbaric vandalism!" The artist's initials, "WNW," are shown near the lower right corner of the sketch. Printed text near the lower border shows "Liberty Loan Committee, Third Federal Reserve District, Lincoln building, Philadelphia."
