World War I poster with the messages: "They Kept the Sea Lanes Open" and "Invest In The Victory Liberty Loan." The poster shows a color painting of an active maritime scene with three vessels in close quarters. A damaged German U-boat (submarine) is shown in the foreground which is floundering in the heavy seas. German sailors on the foredeck are surrendering to the U.S. Navy patrol boat which is shown in the right background. In the left background, a passenger steamship is underway. The artist's name, "L. A. Shafer," is shown at the lower right corner of the painting. Small printed text at the lower edge of the image shows "6-C" and "The W.F. Powers Co. Lith., N.Y."
