Half-tone print of an artistic rendition of a bird's-eye view of Detroit in 1818 on the recto, and 1918 on the verso. On the 1818 side Detroit is pictured surrounded by a stockade. Fort Shelby and Ste. Anne's Catholic Church are discernible among the city's structures. Beyond the walls are several farms. The WALK-IN-THE-WATER is in the Detroit River, along with several sailing ships.
The verso depicts downtown Detroit, and areas to the west, rough from Fourth Street to Raynor Street, and State Street to the Detroit River, in 1918. Visible landmarks include the Wayne County Building, Cadillac Square, Campus Martius, the Majestic Building, City Hall, the Pontchartrain Hotel, the Post Office at Fort and Shelby, the Hammond Building, the Dime Building, and the Ford Building. Several steamships, including the STE. CLAIRE, COLUMBIA, and the LANSDOWNE are pictured at dock or under steam. "Detroit Historical Museum," is stamped on the left edge of the recto beside a handwritten label which reads, "D/River Front 1818 + 1918."
Both sides bear a copyright mark, "GG."
