Proclamation

Proclamation issued and signed by Mayor Roman Gribbs on July 11, 1971, proclaiming the day as Anthony Wayne Day. The proclamation is embossed and stamped with the Mayor's seal. The text of the proclamation is as follows:

"A turning point in the history of Detroit pivots around July 11, 1796 when the American flag first waved over Detroit and Michigan simultaneously.

This historic event was precipitated by the efforts and allegiance of General Anthony Wayne who led Americans against British and Indian foes to pursue and secure sovereignty.

General Wayne's victories fostered further settlement of Detroit and his name was given to the developing county here, the boundaries of which extended even beyond the present boundaries of the State of Michigan.

This year, July 11 marks the one hundred and seventy-fifth anniversary of flying the American flag over Detroit and Michigan.

Therefore, I, Roman S. Gribbs, Mayor of the City of Detroit, proclaim July 11, 1971 as Anthony Wayne Day in commemoration of General Wayne's Historic achievements in securing freedom, independence and promise for the City of Detroit and the County of Wayne.
