African-American Heritage Day
Proclamation, "African-American Heritage Day," issued February 4, 1978 by Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young. The proclamation is signed by Mayor Young at bottom right and is affixed with blue ribbon and the gold seal of the Mayor of the City of Detroit at bottom left. It is mounted on gold cardboard backing. The text of the proclamation is as follows:
"African-Americans were early settlers in Detroit, contributing greatly to the growth of this city and adding to the richness of its diverse cultures.
The black population of Detroit has made economic, social and political gains, achieving state and national acclaim for many outstanding accomplishments.
The struggles of African-Americans has strengthened the race and increased the determination of black Americans to succeed and contribute to the progress and betterment of humankind.
The Detroit Historical Society and Museum will sponsor an African-American Heritage Celebration beginning Saturday, February 4, 1978, featuring exhibits, a jazz concert and a display of the history and culture of African-Americans.
Therefore, I, Coleman A. Young, Mayor of the City of Detroit, issue this Proclamation designating February 4, 1978 as African-American Heritage Day and encourage all citizens to participate in the activities planned throughout February in tribute to the contributions of the African-American citizens of Detroit."
