A Concurrent Resolution of Tribute to the Former Ballplayers of the Negro Baseball League

WHEREAS, The members of the Michigan Legislature are proud to join with Nataki Talibah Schoolhouse of Detroit in honoring the former ballplayers of the fabled Negro Baseball League in conjunction with the school's musical production and celebration of the important role the league played in the history of America's favorite pastime. it is truly a pleasure to take this opportunity to acknowledge the accomplishments of these outstanding athletes; and

WHEREAS, Founded in 1920, the Negro Baseball League served as an alternative for talented black athletes in a society that was all too slow in accepting the emergence of blacks, particularly in professional sports. Featuring such bona fide baseball legends as James "Cool Papa" Bell, Josh Gibson, Newt Allen, Monte Irwin, James Joe Green, Buck Leonard, David Malarcher, Ted Page, and Satchel Paige, the Negro Baseball League provided the backdrop for the remarkable exploits of these superstars of a bygone era. Indeed, until disbanding in 1950, the Negro Baseball League served as the focal point both for aspirations of black ballplayers and for the pride and respect of black America; and

WHEREAS, It is certainly appropriate to reflect on the accomplishments of the dedicated ballplayers of the Negro Baseball League. The events sponsored by the Nataki Talibah Schoolhouse of Detroit are designed to recognize the unity, team spirit, determination, and dignity that played such an important role in the success of the league. Clearly, this slice of Americana exemplifies the pride of black people; now, therefore, be it
