1989 Greek Festival, 5-26-89
U-Matic S tape containing footage of shot of at the 1989 Greek Festival in Hart Plaza on May 26th.
The tape begins with a shot of the "Welcome to the Greek Festival" banner in Hart Plaza's amphitheater area followed by shots of people eating as pre-recorded Greek music plays. Then a four-piece jazz band performs in the amphitheater. The camera captures shots of the band, the crowd, and the Renaissance Center standing in the distance.
Next the camera rolls on a jewelry vendor's booth. Afterward the camera moves into Hart Plaza's enclosed cultural gallery area for a series of shots of exhibit panels concerning Greek history and culture. A wooden doll is among the things on display.
The camera then moves to the food court for a series of shots featuring people preparing and serving gyros and saganaki. Some vendors wear t-shirt emblazoned with "Have a Greek time." Signs identify some of the vendors as being from St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Bloomfield Hills, and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church of Windsor. After a brief shot of a group of children, the camera gets several shots of cooks grilling shish-kabob in the open air area off of the food court.
Next a short shot shows a variety of dragon-themed items for sale at a vendor's booth. The camera then roams around Hart Plaza getting a series of shots of people near the Dodge Fountain, the riverfront, the spiral-shaped ramp around the ventilation tower, the Pyramid behind Ford Auditorium, and playing chess at a picnic table. In one shot of the riverfront, the Star Line Corporation's dining cruise ship STAR OF DETROIT approaches, as the LANSDOWNE is moored at the shore.
The recording is on a 3M UCA-30s U-Matic S tape with a handwritten 3M label on its top. The tape is housed within a black plastic latching case with a City of Detroit Department of Public Information Video Production label on its cover.
