Back-Up of PSA
U-Matic S tape containing a public service announcement television spot promoting the 1990 African World Festival at Hart Plaza, footage of a jazz band performing at the Afro-American Music Festival, and interviews shot for a 1990 Census public service announcement.
The tape begins with the 1990 African World Festival public service announcement. The spot features footage of the festival from previous years.
After a brief gap in the tape, a group of jazz musicians march through Hart Plaza toward the amphitheater stage while playing "Sweet Georgia Brown." The group takes the stage, then after a cut are shown performing on stage.
After another cut, the camera films goods for sale by vendors at the event including a bag decorated with an image of Malcolm X, marks and other wooden works of sculpture, jewelry, and vases. The camera also lingers on a set of small African National Congress flags for sale at one of the booths.
After another brief gap in the tape, the African World Festival spot runs again.
The remainder of the tape consists of unedited footage shot for a public service announcement urging viewers to respond to the 1990 census. It begins in Hampton Elementary School's gym where two boys are interviewed about the importance of the census as people play basketball in the background. After the interviews the camera rolls as people shoot baskets in the gym.
In the next segment, a woman is interviewed outside of a housing complex. After several takes, the crew attempts to film a group of young children on adjacent yard for the spot.
The video is on a 3M UCA-30S U-Matic S tape with a handwritten 3M label on its top. The tape is housed within a black plastic latching case with a matching blank label on its cover.
