CAY/Blanchard Italian Festival 7/7/89 Tape #2

U-Matic S tape containing footage of shot of the press conference with Mayor Coleman A. Young and Governor James Blanchard held at the 1989 Italian Riverfront Festival in Hart Plaza on July 7th as part of the governor's tour of the Lower Peninsula's shoreline. The recording is continued from tape 2015.008.206.

The tape opens with Mayor Coleman A. Young speaking to television news reporters at Hart Plaza's riverfront area. Bob Berg is by the mayor's side holding a tape recorder. The mayor's comments are difficult to hear over the sounds of crowds and boat motors. Young is then briefly filmed talking to Governor James Blanchard.

William McLaughlin of the Metropolitan Detroit Convention and Visitors Bureau takes to the podium to introduce Mayor Young. Young speaks about the Detroit River, and then introduces Governor Blanchard. Blanchard recognizes some of the other dignitaries present, including Wayne County Executive Ed McNamara, McLaughlin, Canadian consul Larry Duffield, City Council member Clyde Cleveland, Ted Wallace of the Michigan House of Representatives, and State Senator Jackie Vaughn. Blanchard then discusses his tour of Michigan's shoreline, and presents Young with the Celebrate the Great Lakes Partnership Award.

During the speeches, protestors can be heard making environmentally-themed criticisms of the two politicians. At once point the camera pans to signs held by protestors addressing environmental concerns including the Greater Detroit Resource Recovery Facility's incinerator.

After the presentation, the camera films Young as he interacts with the people from the Italian Riverfront Festival and members of the general public. He poses for several photos, and signs several autographs before leaving in a limousine.

The recording is on a 3M UCA-30s U-Matic S tape with a handwritten 3M label on its top. The tape is housed within a black plastic latching case with a City of Detroit Department of Public Information Video Production label on its rear.
