U-Matic

Detroit Gold - Mar. 21, 1984 - Tape #1

U-Matic tape containing footage of a press conference at the Adams-Butzel Complex on March 21, 1984 celebrating Detroit's Olympic hopefuls and up-and-coming athletes, followed by demonstrations by a figure skater and the Police Athletic League hockey team.

The tape opens with a test pattern and the sounds of "Be a Part of the Heart of Detroit (Do It In Detroit)" by the Four Tops. The footage then begins in a room in a area, where Ted Jordon, Deputy Director of Recreation speaks in front of a "For the Best of Everything, Do It in Detroit" banner. He recognizes the director and deputy director of the Department of Public Information, introduces himself, and Dan Krichbaum, Director of the Recreation Department.

Krichbaum several of the guests in the room--former Detroit Lions player and Police Athletic League director Dick Lane, Lemuel "Lem" Barney of the Detroit Lions and the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company, Olympic hurdler Hayes Jones of the Stroh Brewery Company. He then introduces Chuck Lewis, the city's Superintendent of Recreation.

After a cut Lewis discusses the recreation centers' programs, his department's involvement in Hart Plaza's Ethnic festivals, a Special Olympics swimming program, and plans for multi-service centers.

Krichbaum returns to the microphone to briefly mention Michael Orr, the Michigan junior champion figure skater. The tape then cuts to Dick Lane taking the microphone.

Dick Lane discusses his role in the Police Athletic League's hockey program, and he introduces team's players. The camera cuts to show the members of the team standing in the back of the room.

Krichbaum then discusses the boxing, fencing, and gymnastic programs. He then recognizes two boxing coaches, a fencing coach and fencer, and a gymnastics coach and several gymnasts. He also presents modern rhythmic gymnast Wendy Hilliard with a medal. He mentions a tour of the ice arena before the tape cuts.

The video resumes with a boy, presumably Michael Orr, ice skating to John Williams' score for the Star Wars films in the complex's Jack Adams Arena. The Police Athletic League hockey team then skates around the rink before posing in the center for photos.

The video is on a UCA-20 U-Matic S tape with a handwritten Department of Public Information Video Production label on the top. The tape is housed within a black plastic case with a handwritten 3M UCA 20s label card in its clear plastic window sleeve.
