Fred Martin @ East Catholic & Southwestern High Schools for Basketball Championships 4-9-90

U-Matic tape containing footage of assemblies honoring two championship high school basketball teams, first of Class D champions East Catholic High School, then of Class A champions Southwestern High School. Coleman A. Young's executive assistant Fred Martin appears at both events in lieu of the mayor, who was unavailable.

After a plan across the students assembled in the gymnasium of East Catholic High, Coach Dave Soules is filmed addressing the students from behind a podium. He introduces Fred Martin, who then addresses the students. He reads a proclamation from the mayor honoring the team. The two men then present the basketball team's players with t-shirts. Among the members of the team are Robert Kimbrough, James Bost, Michael Boyd, Lamar Penn, Antony Daniel, and Andre Mitchell.

The tape then cuts to show the team posing for a group photo with their shirts. At the end of the East Catholic High portion, the man presents Martin with a signed shirt from the team.

The remainder of the tape was shot at the rally honoring Southwestern High School's team, the Prospectors. The camera pans along the bleachers. A young woman addresses the crowd, and a color guard of R.O.T.C. students present the flag while the Star Spangled Banner is played. The woman then introduces to the podium Principal Betty Hines.

Principal Hines voices the school's appreciation for the team, then introduces the superintendent of area A, Dr. Mary Jeanmarie. Jeanmarie then relays a greeting from general superintendent Dr. John Porter, and praises the team and the district. She mentions that the team will be present at the next night's board meeting. Hines then returns to the podium to introduce Fred Martin and to explain that Mayor Young could not appear in person (which elicits a disappointed reaction from the crowd). She also notes that the school will be sending Mayor Young a letter inviting him to make a later visit to the school.

Martin again apologizes for Young's absence (and likens the demand for the mayor to that for Michael Jackson). He also talks about the school's basketball history, the legacy of coach Perry Watson, and alumni including Antoine 'The Judge' Joubert and Anderson Hunt. With Perry Watson at his side, he then presents a mayoral proclamation to the school.

Following a brief cut, Watson calls each player up to the podium to receive a t-shirt and a handshake from Martin. In order, the players are Orlando Milton, Quincy Bowens, Marcus Wourman, future NBA player Voshon Lenard, Danny Hayes, future University of Detroit Mercy Titans player Kamau Alexander, future Wayne State University Tartars player Kwesi Troutman, future NBA player Howard Eisley, future NCAA player Carlton King, future University of Detroit Mercy Titans player Michael Hamilton, future NCAA player Hashim Bakari, future NCAA player Ken Riley, future NCAA player Elton Carter, future NCAA player Garland Mance, future NBA player and ESPN personality Jalen Rose, Joe Hines, Jamaine Wourman, Anthony Kelley, Eric Washington, Darryl Tarplin, and Brandon Williams.

The woman who started the program then invited Elton Carter to the microphone. He thanks Mayor Young and Martin. Coach Watson then takes the podium to thank Young, Martin, and Dr. Jeanmarie. Next the schools concert choir preform Whitney Houston's "The Greatest Love." After their performance, Principal Hines praises the students for their behavior at the game, as the recording comes to an end.

The video is on a UCA-60 U-Matic tape with a handwritten 3M label on the top. The tape is housed within a black plastic latching clamshell case with a handwritten 3M label on the cover.
