U-Matic S tape containing footage shot for the city's Neighborhood Shopping Days campaign in the shopping districts at East Warren Avenue and Outer Drive, Gratiot Avenue and 7 Mile Road, and Grand River and Greenfield Road, as well as at the Grandland Shopping Center. The footage is primarily shot on the streets of these shopping districts, but the tape also includes scenes inside of a hardware store, and a men's wear store.
The tape opens with audio of street sounds, eventually joined by video shot from the intersection of East Warren Avenue and Audubon Road in Morningside. The camera pans from A&K Imported and Domestic Foods on the east corner, across Audubon, to Kickstand Bicycles, the Mediterranean Lounge, and Paul DeRonne Hardware on the south corner. After a cut, filming resumes with a pan along the northwest side of East Warren, between Courville Street, and Audubon Road. BJ Restaurant, a camera store, a clothing store called Flashback, a typewriter store, Gingrich and Son Piano Company, Messiva's Meats, Niagara Cleaners, and an auto parts store called Tony's are all shown. After another cut, the pan continues across Audubon to City Office Supplies.
Following yet another cut, filming resumes inside of a hardware store--presumably DeRonne Hardware. Here a man is filmed buying several items from a clerk.
After another cut, the crew uses a card to white balance the camera on the southeast side of Gratiot Avenue, south of Seven Mile. The bus stop, the cylindrical Gratiot-Seven Mile marker, and the McDonalds on the west corner are visible in the background. The recording stops and starts several times as the crew adjusts the settings.
Following a gap in the tape, filming resumes still in the in the vicinity of Gratiot and 7 Mile Road. As the crew continues to adjust the camera's white balance the handheld camera swings back and forth along the district's storefronts. Among the businesses shown in these scenes are Gussini Shoes, a F.W. Woolworth Company location, Blackstone men's wear, and a Hallmark store. After another cut, the crew gets several takes of a woman walking into the door of a Montgomery Ward store, followed by a shot of the Gratiot-Seven Mile marker outside of the same store, and a pan across of the store' exterior front across the street.
After another cut, the camera pans from the Montgomery Ward on the northwest corner of Grand River Avenue and Greenfield Road, along the elevated walkway above Grand River, to the clock on the exterior of the Kingsway on the southeast corner. The camera then zooms out and continues across Greenfield to the Meyer Jewelry Company store and Daily Discount Store on the southwest corner. The camera comes to rest on the sign for Diamond Dental Centers on the southwest side of Grand River.
After another cut, the camera pans along storefronts on the northeast side of Grand River Avenue, west of Greenfield Road. These include a wig store, Sussini, an AT&T Phone Center, Cancellation Men's Shoes and Clothing, a Shifrin-Willens jewelry store, Lerner Shops, Bakers, and Agg. A cylindrical Grand River-Greenfield marker stands in front of Agg.
After another cut, filming continues inside of an unidentified men's wear shop. A man and woman behind the counter help a series of customers, first from behind the counter, then at a rack of suit coats.
Following a long gap in the tape, taping resumes outside of Underground Men's Wear in the Grandland Shopping Center, across a parking lot from a Grand Central Markets location. The crew white balances the camera, and then films a "For the Best of Everything... Do It In Detroit" campaign sign in the store's window display.
The video is on a 3M UCA-20 U-Matic S tape with a handwritten 3M label on its top. The tape is housed in a black plastic latching case with a matching label on its cover.
