T.O.P. Top of the Pontch
5-13-88

U-Matic S tape containing footage of the question and answer session following Mayor Coleman A. Young's presentation to members of the Michigan press at the City of Detroit's Outstate Media Day on May 13, 1988 at the Pontchartrain Hotel.

The reporting begins with Mayor Young's speech already in progress, continued from tape 2015.009.043. He references Don Joseph Zaluchi's line in the Godfather about targeting African American communities with drugs, before stressing that heroin and cocaine are affecting everyone, just as AIDS is.

After a cut, Young discusses the precautions that a commission--presumably one convened to study to possibility of casino gambling in Detroit--is taking to prevent leaks to the press of their draft report. A reporter then asks about Atlantic City's approach to casino gambling. Young criticizes Atlantic City's approach and stresses the need to keep money in the city and the make sure the majority of new jobs go to city residents.

In response to a question about a potential George Bush presidency, Young states that he has worked very well with Republican Governor William Milliken.

Finally Young expresses his support for a plan in the works to implement drug testing for police officers.

Finally, after a cut, a woman provides instructions for part pants in Outstate Media Day to get to the next phase of the event--either an ice skating event at Joe Louis Arena or a baseball game.

The recording is on a Sony 20XBR U-Matic tape with a handwritten 3M label across its top. The tape is housed within a black plastic latching case with a matching label on its cover.
