U-Matic S tape containing unedited footage of Mayor Coleman A. Young giving a presentation for the purposes of a public service announcement (see tape 2015.008.074) at the Renaissance Center on July 11, 1985, as part of the Neighborhood Shopping Days campaign spanning July 18th to the 21st. Mayor Coleman A. Young is shown surrounded by representatives of neighborhood shopping areas. He discusses the importance of neighborhood merchants, and urges people to shop in their neighborhoods. He lists some of the shopping districts participating in the campaign: Bagley Avenue (Mexicantown), Civic Center East (Kelly/Whittier/Hayes), Dexter-Davison, East Warren Avenue-Outer Drive, Grand Green, Gratiot Avenue-Seven Mile Road, Livernois Avenue-Seven Mile Road, Redford Is (Grand River Avenue and Lahser Road), Vernor Junction, Vernor-Springwells, and Virginia Park.
Following this initial presentation, filming continues for several other takes. In these additional takes, the crew has difficulty with Young's microphone, and Young gives incorrect dates for the campaign. In the final take, he discusses coupons, and urges the public to inform him if they do not find low prices during the promotion. The camera then continues to roll as Young laughs about his line concerning "luxurious automobiles" and the crew hands t-shirts out to the assembled representatives. The members of the group are them filmed for some additional shots without Young.
The video is on a 3M MBU-18 U-Matic S tape with a typewritten 3M label on its top. The tape is housed in a black plastic latching case with a matching label on its cover.
