U-Matic S tape containing b-roll shot for the video "'E.T. Tourist' The Visit," produced by the City of Detroit's Department of Public Information for Media Day 1990. The footage features the New Center area, the 1990 Downtown Hoedown in Hart Plaza, and "Adult Prom" night at Club Land in the State Theatre.
The tape begins several exterior shot of the Motown Museum. Members of the camera crew can be heard talking in the background.
Next, the camera is positioned in the median of West Grand Boulevard, where it pans from flowers planted in the median, to the "St. Regis Hotel" sign in the media, and then over to the Hotel St. Regis on the north side of the street. A worker is then filmed planting flowers in the median, with the Cadillac Building in the background.
After a shot of traffic on West Grand Boulevard, the camera zooms from the sign on the exterior of the Normandie, to New Center Park in the foreground. Next the camera zooms between the sign for the Fisher Theatre and the Fisher Building. The Attic Theatre's sign and signs below in its windows promoting Coda and the Great Detroit Jazz Reunion are shown next. Afterward, the camera gets a Dutch angle shot of a Tastefest banner on a light pole, before returning to the exterior of the Attic Theatre. The New Center portion of the video ends with a shot of a "New Center" light pole banner.
The camera then moves to the 1990 Downtown Hoedown in Hart Plaza for shots of the crowd, a group of square dancers dancing with the Renaissance Center in the background, and a country band performing on the stage overlooking the amphitheater. The camera also gets shots transitioning from the Renaissance Center and the Dodge Fountain to the crowd seated in the amphitheater area. The camera also peers down on people, and a near the ramps leading to lower level. On Hart Plaza's surface level, after several other crowd shots, the camera finds an artist sketching a woman. More crowd shots follow.
At Hart Plaza's riverfront, the camera films several passing motorboats, and a child in a straw hat. Next people are filmed sitting on the steps of Hart Plaza's Pyramid, while two Detroit Police Department officers patrol the area. The Hoedown sections ends with brief shots of the crowd near the Dodge Fountain, and of the band on stage.
The final segment of the video shows the night club Club Land in the State Theatre, where an "Adult Prom" themed event is being held. The camera moves from the front entrance to the bar area, although the picture is dark. The club's disco ball, a monitor showing an animation with the Club Land logo, club goers waving to the camera are all featured in subsequent shots. While filming the marquee outside of the theater, the crew can be heard discussing plans for the video, "'E.T. Tourist' The Visit." They shoot several other takes of the entrance to the club, while trying to compensate for the low lighting. After returning to the club's exterior, the crew films valet parking attendants and arriving vehicles on Woodward Avenue. Inside, the crew films people dancing to Technotronic's "Pump Up the Jam," Talking Heads' "And She Was," and Paula Abdul's "Straight Up." A wall of video monitors and several projection screens showing music videos decorate the stage.
The recording is on a 3M UCA 30S U-Matic S tape with a handwritten 3M label on its top, marked "Club Land 1990." The tape is housed within a black plastic latching case with a matching label on its cover, marked "Media Day 5-12-90, Hoedown, Clubland - Dancers, Logged." A two page handwritten shot list is included in the case:
