U-Matic

Montreux/Detroit Jazz Fest, 8-30-91

U-Matic S tape containing footage shot at the 1991 Montreux Detroit International Jazz Festival, followed by short clips of Mayor Coleman A. Young speaking at a press conference and at a City Council meeting.

The tape begins with a momentary clip of Mayor Coleman A. Young, suggesting the tape was reused. Next, initially audio, then video follows of the Sterling Heights Jazz Band performing at the Jazz Fest on a small stage adjacent to Ford Auditorium. The performance is briefly interrupted by a shot of Mayor Coleman A. Young at a press conference. After the first song, the camera turns to the audience.

After another cut another jazz band is shown, this one performing at the main amphitheater stage. Following another cut the band is joined by a singer for "Green Dolphin Street.". As the song ends, the camera begins to film the crowd. The crowd shots continue as the band begins to play a song called "New Swing." The camera continues to pan around the amphitheater capturing the crowd, the band, and the sponsorship banners. As the band continues to play, the camera moves to the top of the amphitheater for a wide shot of the stage.

After a cut in the jazz fest footage, Mayor Coleman A. Young is filmed in a meeting discussing crime and police resources. The camera remains trained on the mayor even as other people present at the meeting respond to him and ask him questions from off camera. The secret police fund appears to be a topic of discussion.

Following yet another cut, Mayor Coleman A. Young is shown reading a statement at a City Council meeting concerning bonds to fund the development of parks, to fund the Detroit Institute of Arts, and to support a new Detroit Fire Department station. He explains that the bonds are unconnected to rumors of casino gambling in Detroit.

The video is on a 3M UCA-30S U-Matic S tape with a handwritten City of Detroit Department of Public Information Video Production label on its top. The tape is housed within a black plastic latching case with a matching label on its cover.
A handwritten note included in the case reads:
