N. Edison Sweet Project
U-Matic tape containing footage of the Wayne County Building, the Financial District, the Detroit Club, Washington Boulevard, the Whitney, the neighborhood surrounding the Dr. Ossian Sweet house at Garland Street and Charlevoix Street, and finally around the LaSalle Gardens neighborhood, all set to new age music by Andreas Vollenweider. The footage is compiled from tapes 2015.008.168, 2015.008.169, and 2015.008.170.
The tape opens with footage of the Wayne County Building from Cadillac Square. The camera then movies into the building's interior for a series of shots showing the main staircase, lobby, halls, and mosaic tiles. The camera also tours an ornate courtroom, where signs for county officials Milton Mack, Edward Boike, Jr., Ricardo A. Solomon are visible marking their seats. The camera also explores room 300, a large conference room where a small group appears to be informally meeting.
The camera then moves to the city's Financial District for a series of exterior shots. These include a southwesterly view along Congress Street, west of Griswold Street. The Buhl Building, a flower vendor set up on the sidewalk outside of the Buhl Building, the Ford Building, the Guardian Building, and a northwesterly view along Griswold Street from Congress.
The next segment begins with exterior shots of the Detroit Club at 712 Cass Avenue. The camera then moves to Washington Boulevard, south of Michigan Avenue, for shots of the Book-Cadillac Hotel, Detroit Citizen's Railway trolley, the pedestrian mall, and a zoom from the distant steeple of Central United Methodist Church.
The camera is then repositioned at the east corner of Woodward Avenue and Adams Avenue. It pans around in a full circle from Central United Methodist Church, around Grand Circus Park, and catches traffic along Woodward Avenue.
Next, the camera moves to the interior of the Whitney. The camera pans around to feature its tapestries, dining areas, upstairs bar, staircase, and furniture, before moving outside for several exteriors.
Next, several shots follow consisting of brick Tudor-style houses in an unidentified neighborhood--possibly Morningside.
The final segment on the tape contains a series of shots taken from a moving car of the eastside neighborhood surrounding the Dr. Ossian Sweet house on Garland Street, and then around the LaSalle Gardens neighborhood. Captions appear on screen to identify the depicted streets. The camera pans along the houses along Garland Street, as it moves from below Goethe Street, southeast toward Charlevoix Street. At the end of the block, on the west corner of Garland and Charlevoix, the former home of Dr. Ossian Sweet is identified by a caption. Next, the camera is driven northwest along Cadillac Boulevard from Charlevoix, toward Goethe.
After a cut, the car is then in LaSalle Gardens. First the camera films houses as it is driven southwest along Lamothe Avenue from 14th Street toward LaSalle Boulevard. In the final shot, the car drives along LaSalle Boulevard between Lamothe and South LaSalle Gardens
The video is on a 3M UCA 30 U-Matic tape with a handwritten 3M label on its top. The tape is housed within a latching black plastic case with a matching label on its cover.
