Sept. 4, 1986 11 a.m.
Tape #1
Raw Footage

U-Matic S tape containing the first of three parts of footage of the September 4, 1986 press conference for No Crime Day, September 27, 1986. This portion features Mayor Coleman A. Young and Isiah Thomas discussing the planned events of No Crime Day.

Against a backdrop of one of event's posters, Mayor Young begins by explaining Thomas' inspiration for the event, and mentioning other public figures involved in No Crime Day, including L.A. Laker Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Kirk Gibson of the Detroit Tigers, boxers Tommy Hearns and Milton McCrory, Stevie Wonder, Bill Cosby, Smokey Robinson, Prince, and the possibility of Aretha Franklin.

Thomas then talks about the aims of the project, as well as its components. Events include a March Against Crime from Fisher Freeway to Hart Plaza at 12 p.m., a banquet following to benefit scholarship funds for Detroit youth, and finally the "Lights On" Campaign starting at 8 p.m. that asks businesses and residents to leave their lights on to signify a community against crime.

A representative from the Detroit Pistons appears at the podium to introduce the campaign's public service announcements, but the recording omits this portion of the press conference.

After recording resumes, Mayor Young next highlights the business partners, including Sandy Smith from Sander's, the Association of Independent Petroleum Dealers, Borden's, and 7-Eleven, amongst others. The recording on this tape ends as he talks about the involvement of area school districts. The press conference is continued on tape 2015.009.177.

The recording is on a 3M MBU-18s U-Matic S tape with a 3M handwritten label. The tape is housed within a black plastic 3M case with a handwritten 3M label.
