Tape Change - M4 My Heart is With Detroit, Devils' Nite Program
10/29/92

U-Matic S tape containing the middle portion of a multi-camera recording of the 1992 My Heart Is With Detroit Ceremony at Martin Luther King High School, honoring the winners and participants in the anti-Devil's Night poster, essay, rap, and speech contests. The event is hosted by John Mason of WJLB, and the camera occasionally cuts to a sign language interpreter seated in front of the stage. This tape overlaps tapes 2015.008.147 and 2015.008.148, and seamlessly features the speech split between them.

The recording begins in the middle of the speech given by Norman O'Daniel of Maheras Recreation Center. She's followed by Hassan Woods of Munger Middle School, who performs a rap.

The high school division begins with the third place speech by Robert Griffie of Martin Luther King High. He praises the city's recreation centers, and mentions Nelson Mandela's visit to Detroit. He is followed by Shannon Shelton of Renaissance High gives a speech, who tied for third place. She evokes the city's motto in her speech. Next is the second place winner, Reishia Kelsey of Martin Luther King High. In her speech, she refutes negative media portrayals of Detroit. The recording ends in the middle of her speech.

The recording is on a brown Sony U-Matic S tape with a handwritten Sony labels on its top and spine. The tape is housed within a grey plastic U-Matic case with a matching label in its cover window sleeve. A handwritten note included in the case teases the crew:

Crew,
I came, I looked, I rearranged all the cables, disconnected all the plugs and pushed every button. The view finders are upside down and I white balanced all the camera using purple.
Good luck. See you this evening.
