DEMF - Aux Men 2002
VHS tape containing camcorder footage shot of two performances by the electro band Aux Men, containing members of AUX 88. In the first portion, the group performs a set of covers of classic electro, techno, and funk songs on the main stage of the 2002 Detroit Electronic Music Festival in Hart Plaza on Monday, May 27th. This footage was shot from stage right, and an in-camera "snapshot" effect is occasionally used. In the second portion, the group perform at Motor, and are filmed from stage left.
The tape opens with a excerpt of a dedication by an unidentified man to police and firefighters in reference to the events of September 11, 2001, before the Aux Men are introduced by Eddie Fowlkes and DJ Bone. The group enters to the sounds of the Star Wars theme, wearing military-influenced tactical vests and cargo pants. Their set consists of Derrick May's Spiritual Strings Of Life; Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express, It's More Fun to Compute, and--after a brief interlude of the main piano riff from Barry White's I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More--Man Machine; Yellow Magic Orchestra's Computer Game; Sharevari by A Number of Names; Planet Rock and Looking for the Perfect Beat by Afrika Bambaataa and Soulsonic Force; Pack Jam by the Jonzun Crew; Moments In Love by the Art of Noise; Funkadelic's Cosmic Slop; and--after bringing Juan Atkins out on stage in tribute--Cybotron's Cosmic Cars, Alleys Of Your Mind, and Cosmic Raindance. The Aux Men are joined by several additional vocalists for the Afrika Bambaataa songs, and later by techno group Strand and guitarist Marty Bonds for Cosmic Slop. The performance also incorporates samples of the voice of radio D.J. the Electrifying Mojo.
In the second performance, shot at the Motor Lounge, the core members of the group wear hooded cloaks and masks, and are joined by several other musicians. This set again includes Cosmic Slop, and Trans Europe Express.
The video is on a Maxell T-120 STD tape with a handwritten label on the side. The tape is housed within a blue Maxell Standard Grade T-120 cardboard sleeve.
