Control, Elevator
One brass elevator control wheel and panel from the Farmer Street section of the J. L. Hudson Company store in downtown Detroit. The brass control wheel has rounded edges, a narrow raised band at the border, and a black plastic handle at the edge. A logo at the center of the wheel shows a globe design with decorative script that shows "Otis" and "Trade Mark." The back of the wheel has a brass center spindle with a bored center. A copper electrical contact plate is mounted on the back of the wheel and it extends along one quarter of the perimeter opposite the handle.
The raised panel cover has rounded edges, a narrow raised band at the border, and screw holes at all four corners. Three openings with raised text are located across the upper area of the panel to provide space for control switches which are identified as follows (left to right):
1. "Emergency Stop" with "Run" in the up position and "Stop" in the down position. This
switch has a locking steel hasp to keep the switch in the "Stop" position.
2. "Emergency Operation" and "To Operate Car With Doors Open, Break Glass and Hold
Button Pressed."
3. "Light Switch" with "On" in the up position and "Off" in the "Down" position.
The back of the panel has raised text near the lower edge that shows "773-SW-1."
