Finder, Star

One "Star Finder and Identifier" used by the United States Power Squadron for their Junior Navigation training courses in celestial navigation. The star finder has a white plastic disc-shaped base that is marked with star names/locations for the northern hemisphere on one side and for the southern hemisphere on the other. A total of 57 stars are shown. A short plastic pin is located at the center of the base which allows interchangeable clear plastic template discs to be placed onto it and rotated on the pin. The interchangeable template discs include nine altitude-azimuth templates (blue line) and one meridian angle declination template (red line). The appropriate template disc is placed on the white base disc and then rotated to the proper location in order to determine the direction and azimuth of various stars at a particular time. The star finder includes a direction sheet and a blue/clear plastic storage pouch that has a snap closure. The blue side of the pouch is stamped with gold-colored text that reads "United States Power Squadrons" and "Star Finder." The direction sheet is printed in black text on both sides. The Star Finder and Identifier, No. 2102-D, was made by Similux. A circular paper/cardboard "LHA [Local Hour Angle] Finder" is also included.
