Helmet, Firefighter's

Fire helmet. White leather "leatherhead" style firefighter's helmet. Front crest is painted gold, and reads "Chief Engineer J.B." referring to its wearer James Battle. Tooled leather scrollwork rounds the brim, and each triangular face composing the crown is tooled with two pairs of parallel lines which meet at the top underneath a diamond motif. A small metal plaque reading "Cairns & Brother, 43 Grand St. New York" is attached to the underside of the brim's front. A thin metal sheet curved and bolted around both sides of the lateral ridge along crown holds a metal ring, onto which a bent metal hook is attached. The crest was likely once supported from behind by a lion or eagle at the top of the crown.
